6 Fit Tips for the New Year

Posted on January 15, 2020 at 12:00 AM

Arm yourself with these tips from our athletes to help you in reaching your fitness goals.

“Set objective goals with a definitive time frame. So many people look to "lose weight", "get fit", or "get in shape". These are all goals that are based in self-judgement, so the person is beating himself or herself up before even beginning. Since there's nothing tangible or definitive about "getting in shape", it's hard to know exactly what success or accomplishing this goal might look like. Instead, look to run a 5K in a certain amount of time, beat previous lifting PRs, sign up for a competition, or strive to add size to certain muscle groups. In working towards these goals, I guarantee that getting fit happens along the way!”
• Erin Stern, 2x Ms. Olympia

“Fitness results, whether you're talking about body composition, weight loss, strength gain, etc. - come best from small improvements added up over time. Too often we want huge, breakthrough moments in fitness. We don't get them and then we get discouraged and may even give up. Don't worry if you don't see improvement right away or every day. Just focus on getting 1% better every day, and by the end of 2020 you will be a completely different person.”
•  Bryan Dermody, Powerlifter | Former Strength & Conditioning Coach

"When setting your goals, no matter what they are, you have to make sure they are S.M.A.R.T. (Specific-Measurable-Attainable-Realistic-Time Based).  Training "SMART,' will increase the probability of achieving your goals in 2020."
 • JP (John Porter Jr.), USA Masters Track & Field Athlete

"New goals can be tough and results aren't seen overnight, but don't give up. Persistence and consistency have been and always will be key!"
• Carissa Johnson, Fit Mom | WBFF Pro

“My best “fit tip” for 2020 would be to have a clearly defined goal - complete with a timeline for that goal.  Without a specific goal and a timeline for that goal it can be easy to keep putting off working toward that goal.  Too many times we can find ourselves saying, “I’ll start next .......” insert tomorrow, next week, next month and even next year!”
• Tim Nassen, Retired P.E. Professional | Master’s Bodybuilder

"My favorite fit tip is to find a way to make fitness your lifestyle. Fitness for me is as second nature as brushing my teeth. Start with something you love doing! Continue to do it on a regular basis until it becomes part of your day, hopefully one of your favorite parts!"
• Danyelle Mastarone, Fit Mom | Former Figure Competitor
